High Five!
We got to see Polly yesterday!! She made time for a quick breakfast before catching her plane back to Boston.
There were fun games:
There were also reminders that someone is now a two-year-old:
There was also the classic "Why isn't the picture taking when I'm pressing the button? Oh wait! It's videotaping!" moment. (B's eyes are particularly amusing to follow in this clip!):
But, mostly, there were high fives!
Hope to see you again soon, friend!

It's Official Now: The Kiddos are TWO!
After two postponements due to snow (and its aftermath), we finally had our playgroup birthday party yesterday at Amedeo's house!
The key ingredients were there: balloons, tasty treats, birthday cake, party hats, favors!
And there was even that crazy person who tries to get in a picture with everyone!
Let's see-- what am I forgetting as a key component? Oh yes: gifts! There was indeed a gift exchange and, as you can see from Lindsey's picture, I was shocked at the awesomeness of what B received from his secret gift-giver (Cady):
(Suzi, you might not want to show Katie these pics or your bus-lover will be green with envy!)
He got his very own pop-up school bus playhut!! Opening it up once we got back home:
A little perplexed by the detached steering wheel:
Coolest.Bus.Ever.

So here they are--- the 8 two-year olds (and one little brother!)
For more creative takes on the individual toddlers, check out this post or this post!

Name that Tool
Seriously. What is this called?
I thought it was a hoe, but it seems that hoes have blades perpendicular to the handle.

Whatever it is, it's how the Big Guy attacked the ginormous piles of "snow" (it's really more like ice now) that the county plows dumped onto our sidewalk when they FINALLY plowed the street curb-to-curb an entire week after it stopped snowing:
We were the lucky recipients of two piles on our part of the sidewalk. One was 5' tall and at least 8' wide, and the other (in the foreground) was not as high but still annoying. Our communal mailboxes are located in front of our neighbor's house, and they were treated to a big pile as well, so I've been walking in the street to get the mail. Seems kinda strange...

Day Brightener
Mornings are fun around here because I always forget that I'm going to find the evidence of the previous night's bathtime when I go into the bathroom. Here's what I found earlier this week:
I don't know what Stodgy Max Power Juice is, but it sure made me giggle!
Here's to a giggly Friday for you all!! Happy weekend!

Monday
Man, my non-flowery proclamation of love yesterday must have done me in because I am just at a loss for a topic of interest today. I thought about pasting in my term paper from my class on The History of the American Presidency since that would be timely for today's holiday, but I'll spare you.
Here's a scene from these parts:
What's new with you?

LOVE.
If you're looking for a flowery proclamation of love on this Valentine's Day, you'll need to look elsewhere. While I do so enjoy gooey cheese on bread, I'm not so much into it on this blog. That does not mean, however, that I don't have buckets and buckets of warm fuzzies for the Big Guy. He's just pretty cool.
Case in point:
I recently asked him if he could figure out how to fashion a homemade version of those plastic contraptions where cars move down ramps from level to level. In practically an instant, he constructed what he called "the prototype":
It did the trick, but he was disappointed in the lack of height.
Fast forward to yesterday when the next stage got underway. After lots of cutting, folding, tweaking, and adjusting, we now have Version 2.0-- and still just with random materials we had on hand!
(I don't know why it's a black screen, but it should play when you start it.)
The only hiccup is that he couldn't figure out how to keep the cars from flipping over (and therefore ceasing to move), but it sure does work great with balls, right??! The B-man seems to be pleased:
Happy Valentine's Day to all with lots of LOVE from us!

{Polly's Ponderings} USA! USA! USA!
And now a word from the biggest sports fan I know...POLLY P!
They're finally here!!! The 2010 Olympic Games! My favorite biennial event. The best of the best will be competing for all the world to see and I can hardly contain my excitement. Let’s start off with some fun Olympic trivia.
Did you know…
1- Canada has never won an Olympic gold medal on its home soil. Let’s keep that tradition alive, eh?
2 - Each of the Olympic rings represent the 5 inhabited continents - The Americas, Asia, Africa, Europe and Australia. Every national flag contains at least one of the colors of the Olympic rings.
3 - The United States has hosted more Winter games than any other country - 1932 in Lake Placid, 1960 in Squaw Valley, 1980 in Lake Placid and 2000 in Salt Lake City.
4 - During the opening ceremonies, Greece always marches first and the host country always marches last. Every other country marches in alphabetical order according to the host country’s language.
5 - The very first Winter Olympic gold medal was won by an American speed skater, Charles Jewtraw. Way to start things off right, Mr. Jewtraw!
One of my favorite Olympic moments was the smashing relay victory during Michael Phelps’s quest to win 8 gold medals in 8 events in Beijing. The 4x100 freestyle relay was the most exciting race I’ve ever seen. It was a come-from-behind nail biter of a win to say the least. Jason Lezak swam the anchor leg and had the seemingly impossible task of catching Frenchman Alain Bernard. When all hope seemed lost, Lezak turned superhuman and swam the fastest split in Olympic history to catch Bernard and capture the gold.
And do you remember the NBC commentators during the race?…“Its gonna take a lot, realistically, for the United States to outlast France...Jason Lezak is gonna have to make up some ground…I just don’t think they can do it…Bernard is pulling away from him… the United States is trying to hang on to second...They should get the silver medal…”
Geesh! Where’s Al Michaels believing in those miracles when you need him? What made this victory even sweeter was Alain Bernard’s comments prior to the race: "The Americans? We're going to smash them. That's what we came here for." Haha, oh Alain, you should know better than to mess with the USA. I sincerely hope you look good in silver.
So what’s your favorite Olympic memory??
Was it that Miracle on Ice in Lake Placid in 1980? Or maybe you liked Mary Lou Retton’s Perfect 10, or Kerri Strug’s heroic performance on the vault after injuring her ankle, or Michael Johnson’s gold shoes carrying him to the gold medal in world record time in ‘96? How about Dan Jansen finally winning the gold medal after struggling though tragedy and heartache in his previous two Olympics? How could you not cheer for him as he skated around the rink with his baby girl? What about third generation Olympian, Jimmy Shea, holding up his gold medal and a picture of his grandfather who had passed away just two weeks earlier. And who could forget Muhammad Ali lighting the cauldron in Atlanta?
The list just goes on and on. So who’s going to steal the show in Vancouver?
Alpine Skiing: If Lindsey Vonn remains healthy the question will be how many medals not if she will medal. And Bode Miller is looking to make a statement after his bummer of an Olympics in ‘06. My money’s on him winning the gold.
Snow Boarding: 2 words - SHAUN WHITE. Might as well give him the gold medal now.
Speed Skating: I’ll bet on Apollo Ohno. First it was Dancing with the Stars, now the Olympics - is there anything this guy can’t do? Shani Davis is also a real stud in this category and should blow away the competition in the 1500 and 1000. Trevor Marsicano is a newcomer but if his world championship performance is any indication, watch out world!
Men’s Hockey:
Disclaimer: I don’t usually cheer for other countries during Olympic time but I'm a bit of an Ovie fan so things may be a little different this year.
I would love for Team USA to win the gold medal but I just don’t see it happening this year. They’ve been plagued with a lot of injuries lately, a family tragedy last week, and a lack of world class talent all along. I’m rooting for ya boys, but my guess is that Russia takes the gold. They are led by the Great 8, Alex Ovechkin, and I’m pretty sure he could take on the rest of the world single handedly (and maybe even blind-folded) and still win the gold.
Women’s Hockey: USA is looking pretty good this year. And it can’t hurt to be coached by a member of that famous "Miracle on Ice" team. I bet I can guess the pre-game speech…“Great moments are born from great opportunity…”
The opening ceremonies are tonight--the countdown is on!! Get on your red, white and blue and get ready to cheer. It's going to be an exciting 2 weeks!
Now let me hear you, all at once…U-S-A…U-S-A…

31 Things I'll Probably Do Today
1. Consider whether it's worth it to take a shower. (could go either way.)
2. Look outside and shake my head.
3. Plead with Brooks to eat.
4. Plead with Brooks to stop sniffing candles obsessively.
5. Plead with Brooks to give me a hug.
6. Plead with the BG to give me a hug.
7. Hug a stuffed animal.
8. Think about eating chocolate.
9. Feel guilty about thinking about eating chocolate.
10. Eat chocolate.
11. Feel guilty about eating chocolate.
12. Cook.
13. Marvel at how many meals we've had at home in the last 4+ days (all of them).
14. Wonder what our water bill will be with all the extra dishwasher loads.
15. Wonder what our electricity bill will be given these blizzards.
16. Get depressed.*
17. Check my email. (and repeat...and repeat..and repeat)
18. Do the same with Facebook.
19. And Google Reader.
20. Not clean the house.
21. Drink some Slightly-Sweet Oregon Chai...probably while checking email/FB/blogs.
22. Wonder if my child will ever stop yelling "Cumin!Garlic!Onion!" as an expression of excitement.
23. Wonder if his interest in spices foretells a cooking career.
24. Wonder if he'll be a National Merit Semi-Finalist and go to Baylor for free.
25. Get stressed about #24 not happening.*
26. Eat more chocolate.
27. Listen to the BG read stories to the LG.
28. Ask the BG if he realizes how on-pitch his "Game-Show Host" reading/singing voice is.
29. Suggest he break it out for the hymns at church.
30. Send birthday greetings to my favorite twin, Carrie S!
31. Be thankful to the (heavenly) Big Guy for my birth 31 years ago today to the most wonderful parents!
And...in honor of the big 31 and its connection to the grandfather of frozen treats-- Baskin-Robbins-- please leave a comment with your favorite ice cream flavor!! For my birthday, I'd love some good audience participation! And don't worry-- it doesn't have to be a Baskin-Robbins flavor!!
I'll start: I'm actually not a huge ice cream person, so I'm going to put in a vote for thick, gooey hot fudge because that makes any ice cream flavor divine! And yes, you're right--that's not a flavor. But it's my birthday. And this is my blog.

Latest from the "I Have a Thing for Green/Brown Bears" File
Remember this?
Well, here's the latest:
And, um, potty-training isn't even really on our radar screen yet-- does that make me a weirdo or just really spirited?! :-)
(Stay tuned for next fall's debut of a super-cute sweater in this category that I've already bought! Fine. It's a mild obsession...!)
Sic 'Em Bears!
PS-- Cars covered with snow again this morning. More accumulation expected today, plus blizzard conditions and 40 mph winds. I hope we keep our power! They've already canceled school for the week plus Monday is President's Day, so this event has turned into a 10-day holiday for the BG!!

Making the Most of ALL THIS SNOW!
You may recall this ladder from a summery time that seems so long ago:

Now it is the tool for the ultimate backyard sledding experience:
He looks decently happy, right?
Trust me, however-- he had even more fun when he realized he could push something even smaller down the frozen slide:
And, in other news, I just want to give a big shout-out to Auntie Polly. She's had all kinds of bummers lately with technical malfunctions, canceled trips, and just generally uncool things. We want you to know that we love you and little Ovie here can't wait to see you soon!
PS-- Projected snowfall for the storm scheduled to hit later today? 10-20 inches. Seriously.

The Boy Loves Buses
And since he does, I couldn't resist making this little purchase, knowing it would be a great activity for our snowed-in weekend!
The original oversized "book":
Folding out:
It's a bus!
And, even better, it became a moving bus!
We'll be treated to paternal presence today and tomorrow for sure since school has already been canceled. And get this: they're calling for 5+ inches of snow Tuesday evening. Who knows when they'll go back to class??!

The Day After
I just opened the front door and took this picture at 7 AM. There is white stuff everywhere! (And the snow is so dense that it's settled/compacted and looks to be less deep than what actually fell.)

My car was completely fine--the tree bent but didn't break--but here are some shots of it from yesterday:

So the deal with getting this much snow (we got about 26-27 inches, although there are much higher drifts everywhere) is that there's no place to put it. You go out to shovel and you have to throw the snow to the side-- so then when you want to shovel the path next to the one you just did, there's now 4 feet of snow to clear. As you can imagine, the roads are even more problematic. We're thinking no school before Wednesday at the earliest but maybe not even until Thursday or later...especially if we get the snow that's predicted for Tuesday eve!!
This is some crazy stuff.
(It's also very UNUSUAL stuff. This is our 8th winter here and we've never seen anything like it. It's one for the record books-- and we love being part of that!!)

Insanity
Pics from this morning...
The snow-watcher checking his measuring device:
Lots of snow!
Point of reference from before yesterday's storm started:
The sliding door:
This is as far as I can open the front door:
Out the basement door:
And, a bit scary, a view out the front window:
(Here's what the tree usually looks like!)
While I was editing pics and writing this post, the BG made his way around the back from the basement door to the sliding door. CRAZY!
Did I mention there is still 5-10" more to fall today??

The Office
Not the one on TV. The one in my basement that I always forget about.
When we were trying to figure out how best to hang B's new map, the big guy asked if I had any thumbtacks. While I was thinking about what I had on hand, he reminded me about the big box o' office supplies I have downstairs on a storage shelf, left from when I had a home office. I pulled it down and man! It was like going shopping at Staples but not having to spend money!
I made the mistake of pulling out the deluxe tub of colored paper clips, however. Soon enough, someone enacted one of his favorite words: DUMP!
That wouldn't have been TOO bad. But then he decided to MIX:
Thankfully, he helped me sort a paper clip or two. (But that's about it!):
Aaahhh.....all better!
I find it a bit odd that I apparently favored green over all the other colors!!!
PS-- Karen I, didn't you make me that pencil holder shown in the first picture???
