I mean, I could have cropped myself out of this pic quite easily, but I figured I'd be all about the greasy reality for our morning sports viewing yesterday!
And now I must tell you that my maternal grandmother pronounced "greasy" with a 'z' sound rather than an 's' sound as I do. What say you, fine people?

Weekend Report
I didn't take a single picture this weekend. Mostly because I spent hours and hours in front of my computer watching live streaming Olympic coverage.
I am not a tape-delay kind of girl. It kills me to know that the answer to something (or, in the case of sports, the results) has already been revealed to people out there. So I'd rather just get in on the action. I watched several hours of both men's and women's gymnastics, but what I really didn't want to miss were the swimming finals. Having spent many years as a spectator in the bleachers cheering on my brother at swim meets, as well as poolside watching teammates compete, I can't imagine missing the head-to-head, thrill-inducing, LIVE competition of swimming!!
(Question for my same-era swimming friends: when did breathing on every stroke become all the rage? I feel like the expression "bi-lateral breathing" was drilled into me back in the day. And, yes, I might have asked this same question 4 years ago!)
My secondhand-adrenaline-fueled weekend culminated in quite the first of its own kind: a "legit" (aka paid!) babysitter came over so the BG and I could escape for a kid-free dinner for the first time in months and months! Of course, she's headed back to college shortly so it's not like we actually found a regular babysitter option, but we'll take it! I had been pretty close to making reservations at one of the highly-rated culinary options around us, but the BG suggested we go low-brow and head to a local shopping plaza where we could eat and stroll around. Turned out to be a great night, weather-wise, for being outside. Of course, it was Sunday evening, so the only place still open after dinner was Target where I re-entered after my 40-day hiatus!
(Side note: I realized there are 2 reasons I was able to go so long without a Target trip: 1) I had just stocked up on diapers when said hiatus began, and 2) I have been making weekly trips to the new Wegmans where I've been buying a lot of the same stuff I used to buy at Target. HA!)
Now that we live so much closer to the BG's place of work, he's going to have to get used to a new phenomenon: in the span of an hour or two, we saw a current student, a former student, and a colleague. Those of you who know him can imagine he does not particularly enjoy such interactions while I, of course, think it's so fun! Ah, expansion of his socializing horizons! :-)
Off to get the day started. Those 8 Krispy Kreme donuts we bought last night aren't going to eat themselves!!

Friday Randoms
- Had C's 18-month appointment yesterday. As we were going down the hall to the exam room, the nurse asked her to step up on the "big" scale, which really threw me. After recording her weight and chatting for a bit, the nurse realized that this wasn't her 2-year old appointment (when they start the big scale)-- she just assumed Giant Girl was already 2! Ha. And, sure enough, she was off the charts once again at 34.5." Guess who else was exactly 34.5" at 18-months? The crazy thing is that she weighs 1.5 pounds less than he did then!! (24 lbs with clothes and diaper; 23 lbs, 9 oz as a naked "baby")
- I gotta say that I am super excited about the Olympics getting underway. I've had a lot more "free time" in the last few weeks than anytime recently and have been kinda sad that there's not much on TV to watch. (I know there are lots of fun summer shows on USA and the like, but you know I can't jump into a series without watching all the previous ones in order on DVD!) For some reason, we watched part of the British Open both Saturday and Sunday and I then spent 30 minutes researching online about the lives of the main golfers. I have an insatiable desire to learn facts about people and the Olympics pretty much gives me non-stop opportunity to do so! Also: GO AMERICA!
- The BG heads to football camp a week from today and then real practice starts on the 11th. Gotta get myself into gear before then to accomplish any tasks best done sans kids. I was SO excited to find pillows for the living room furniture on a shopping excursion Wednesday-- a huge thing off my list! (The pillows we bought for staging the old house ended up matching our new bedroom duvet set--thanks to FAC for figuring this out!--so our couch and chair have been pillow-less for a couple of weeks, making nap-taking and book-reading not quite so comfortable! And the original couch pillows are now with the downstairs furniture, attempting to make it look a little less forlorn.) I also made a haircut appointment for later today at a random hair salon with a random person. I told the receptionist I had "fine hair that wasn't curly or straight but basically mousy." Wish me luck! ;-)
- So, yes, I've also done more reading in the last few weeks. I keep just grabbing something off the New Book shelf at the library since that's about all the time I have before C makes a mess, but I've also gotten to read 2 of the books I'd put on hold. In order of enjoyment, from least to most (although they were all pleasurable): The Nightmare Thief by Meg Gardiner, Long Gone by Alafair Burke, Caught by Harlan Coben, Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, and Wife 22 by Melanie Gideon. Clearly, I like thrillers but apparently I most enjoy sophisticated, well-written chick lit!
- I've been in this motherhood game for 4.5 years now and I've been to the pediatrician for a sick visit exactly once. I realize this could all change tomorrow, but given our track record, I don't have any immediate plans to switch pediatricians even though we now live more than 30 minutes away. Since I trekked all the way over there yesterday, I obviously needed to stop into the neighboring Great Harvest Bread Co. to get a treat for the fam. Decided to try the Cinnamon Babka and, OH MY WORD, is it delicious!! Highly recommended...if you like a giant loaf of soft cinnamon roll! (And, if you don't, I'm not sure we can be friends.)
- Happy Friday!

Al Fresco before Al Forno
Indeed, it is supposed to be something like 20 degrees hotter today than it was yesterday. UGH. We enjoyed the one day's respite by eating dinner outside.
Ah, such natural looks:
He's pretty excited about his chocolate milk!
And this was the best smile I could get out of her. She was very intent on cleaning her plate. Ah, the sweet sweet joy of having a child who eats (or at least tries) all kinds of food!

"Hat"-Head
The Meelie-bug loves to put things on her head. (Do you think it's because she still doesn't have much hair?)
On Monday, it was her brother's bicycle helmet:
Yesterday, it was her standard "pull shorts out of the drawer and put them on" move....even if they obstruct her view:
She actually came running into the kitchen with a khaki pair on but I didn't get my camera out in time. She went back for the red ones (above) but then got bored with those, threw them on the floor, and picked up the khaki ones again:
By evening, she's settled into something a bit more "normal":
PS: Happy half-birthday to our big 18-month old!

Summer Salad
Sheils sent me this recipe in an email on Sunday because a friend had made it 5 times already, it was so tasty. As it happened, I had all the ingredients on hand after a Sunday-morning farmer's market visit so I whipped it up yesterday for lunch...and felt so fancy!
Seriously, it is a delicious summer combo of flavors. I didn't put anywhere near as much olive oil as called for (and also didn't take the time to do the breadcrumbs), and I really think the feta is what makes the dish. Even lowly cow's milk feta that I used rather than sheep's milk feta as called for!
Behold the Tomato and Peach Salad With Corn and Feta:
(if I were the red onion, I'd feel left out since every other ingredient made it into that very descriptive title!)

Summer Snuggles
Yes, it's incredibly dorky how much I love hugs.
Whatever.
My favorite thing about the BG being home during the "summer" (aka July) is that the kids come pile in the bed with us in the morning for hugs. Of course, only one kid can get there on his own; the other has to wait until we retrieve her, which is generally around 7:30 or so. There's usually a brief time of reading whatever board book she thrusts repeatedly at us, followed quickly by her escaping and running around the house, desperately hoping someone will get out of bed and feed her.
See? She's already starting to flip over...
Like a flash, she's over the edge. And then has the gall to look sad about it??!!
Methinks the girl is going to be a bit more dramatic than her brother....and I really don't think we've treated her very differently at all!! Ah, XX chromosomes!

Excitement!
Actually, this post started out as the total opposite of that. I got nothing.
Since the creative well had run dry, I decided to look back at blog posts from July 2009 to see what the Brookster looked like when he was Miss C's age. In just the span of a couple of posts, I found these two pictures:
Hmm-- that Eric guy sure likes to wear plaid shirts, huh?! :-)
Well, guess what else he better start liking soon? Changing diapers!!! Yes indeedy, Fake Auntie Ch(r)isty and Fake Uncle Eric are going to be welcoming a baby in mid-December and we could NOT be more excited!!!!
In fact, just last week, she and I drove all the way out to the only remaining Krispy Kreme in the area to celebrate with copious amounts of donuts!
(Oh, who am I kidding? We just wanted donuts!! But there will be all kinds of celebrations for the already-very-loved bambino!)

Perspective
The other week when the kids were playing on the slide and pool, I took a few shots from different vantage points around the property. These pics should help to give those of you non-locals a sense of where we are now!
I took this picture while sitting in the chair by the pool/slide:
Then I went out to the far back corner of the property and took this pic:
From that same corner spot, I took a pic across the back line where the BG was watering his pampa grass plants that he hopes will grow their ideal 7-feet and become a natural border:
Looking back at the BG (and kids) from the opposite back corner spot:
Then I pivoted in that same spot and shot towards the house:
Now, you might have noticed in the house pics that the deck is "comically small" as the BG calls it. So, since those pics were taken, he has been very busy with the Great 2012 Patio Project. It has been an insane amount of work mostly done in 100 degree heat but the guy keeps saying, "Have I told you lately how much I love manual labor?" Of course, I couldn't answer because I was lying on the couch in a heat coma.
Anyway-- I took this pic yesterday afternoon:
Later in the day, he drove to another Home Depot to pick up more stones. Our local store ran out, although he also can't carry more than 25 or so at a time in his car because of space and the fact they're cement and darn heavy.
Football camp and the onset of the real insanity fast approaches so I know he'll be working feverishly to get it done. Will update at that point!
Guy's crazy but I think we'll keep him around.

Polly-rific!!
Polly P is in town visiting her family this week and she spent the entire day and evening with us yesterday!! It was such a treat to have her here. I'm not sure anyone loves my kids more enthusiastically than she does!!
She arrived while Miss C was taking her morning siesta but couldn't wait to go say hi when the little miss had awoken!
She brought Mr. B all kinds of books so they did some reading, some running around, and--of course-- a tour of the bathroom soaps:
(See how I gave you a mini-tour of the bathrooms there? Since nothing will ever be decorated to give you an actual tour! :-)
We are joining Polly's family in a big crusade to get her to move back here. MOVE BACK, POLLY!!!!!!!!!!!
After all, I feel TALL around you!! :-)

Obsessive Chopping and Dicing
Karen and Ian arrived non-empty-handed (aka "full-handed"?) with a lovely collection of crackers/salami/cheese that I can NOT wait to dive into...and an OCD cutting board. Have you seen this before? Hysterical!
It has quite the grid for pretty much any sort of chopping and dicing one could imagine. We were trying to figure out what one would use the angles in the lower right corner for, however. Suggestions appreciated!!
And because I was snapping a pic of the board on the coffee table next to my farmer's market flowers from Saturday, I just thought I'd include them, too. Because they make me happy! (And they match the couch.)

Dinner a la Pinterest
Karen and Ian were supposed to come for dinner the Saturday of the weekend we lost power after the big storm so they came last night for a make-up! Just for funsies, I decided to put together a menu of dishes found while browsing on Pinterest.
Appetizer: Rosemary-Lemon White Bean Dip
Main Dish: Grilled Balsamic-Garlic Crusted Pork Tenderloin
Side Dish: Tortellini Salad with Asparagus and Fresh Basil Vinaigrette
Side Dish: Watermelon Arugula and Feta Salad
Dessert: Old-Fashioned Custard
Still smiling after the meal-- couldn't have been too bad! :-)
I really enjoyed putting together the entire meal--especially for such wonderful company--but it did make me realize how difficult it would be to do that without another adult to help mind the wee ones. Preparing five dishes takes a lot of time!
Also-- it was all quite yummy but the dish I'm already plotting to make again? That dip!! mmmm

You Are Invited...
...to a "Soap and Iron Party."
What's that, now? You've never heard of such a thing? Really?
Well, then, it's a good thing I have some pictures.
Indeed, the young sir is quite into gathering all his "soap friends" together in the guest bathroom. Makes for fun times when one tries to wash hands in any of the other bathrooms! As for the "iron," it, too, is apparently tons of fun to compile in one place.
Ah, B-man. Keeping us giggling.
HAPPY FRIDAY!!

Around
As in, around a carousel, around a train track, and around an "adventure playground"!
Adventure indeed! The BG gives the football players a break from the afternoon weight room on Wednesdays and yesterday also took a pause on going into school in the AM to do work things, too. Since we had a full day together, I suggested that we go to the regional park down the road a few miles to check out at least a little portion of the 536 acres.
First up: the carousel!
Meelie didn't get upset but apparently also didn't seem to love the ride, either. Looks a little unsettled after the fact, huh?
A little blurry so I went ahead and made the colors match the general mood of this pensive guy!
The girl:
Waiting for the train. Man, who needs those non-smilers on the ends??!
My view of/from the train. It was actually an impressive 13-minute ride and there was such a nice breeze that I pondered taking a little nap.
On our way to the playground, we ran across some pretty serious evidence of the recent power-zapping storm:
This new "Adventure Playground" is like none I've ever seen. Intended for older kids, it boasts an insane assortment of challenges. Unfortunately, I had only one non-zooming lens with me so I'm practically standing in Ohio to get even this shot, and it's like one-third of the action. But see that tallest slide?
B showed no fear and loved it!

Pinterest Pondering and Parking
I have just in the last week or so allowed myself to sign into Pinterest with regularity after many months of staying away due to piles and piles of tasks. Now that we're in a relatively calm part of the year (nevermind that this house is still completely decoration-less....but hey, maybe I'll get ideas on Pinterest), I've really been enjoying reading up on what all my friends have found on the internet.
But here's the thing. I know it's probably horrible to be a consumer and not a producer (recognize that terminology, Jen W?!), but I'm not really into pinning things. The way I see it, I want to tell you after the fact about the cool recipe I made/craft I did/project I accomplished. I don't want to show you ahead of time! And what if it's a gift idea? Why would I want anyone to see it before it materializes?
So I don't pin on Pinterest. I do, however, quite appreciate that everyone else does! :-)
I've made 4 or 5 recipes in the last week that I found on the site, printed out a couple of fun things, and then I actually MADE something:
It has become clear to us recently that the B-man knows a whole lotta sight words. I'm not sure we can call it "reading" but he's definitely on the road. (And lest you think I'm veering into overly-proud-mama territory, let me clearly state for the record that he's got a LONG way to go in mastering any kind of writing/coloring/drawing!)
In any case, someone had pinned this idea and I figured I could actually do that pretty quickly. In classic Emily manner, I drew the border line on the wrong side of the top row of "parking spots" so I actually boxed them in instead of having the line be at the top with "open" spots. (Yes, Jill C, this is like trying to make a 1/2 pan of brownies! ;-)
You'll notice that "hat" and "me" are really neat and tidy. I started with those. Then my Emilyness kicked in again and I no longer had the patience to be neat and tidy. And why are the spots on the sides so small??!
Since I have absolutely zero training in early education, I had no idea what words to include. The example from the pinned blog used an assigned list of Kindergarten sight words to memorize but they were all super boring. So I figured, why not just throw some more interesting ones in there?!!
I'd say it was a success!! Guess I need to come up with some new words pronto because he didn't miss a single one in our first random run-through. Good thing we have lots of cardboard boxes!

Dress-Up Dolls
Yes, I'm talking about my kids. It became not fun to get myself dressed starting about, let's see, 4.5 years ago, so at least I can get a kick out of putting together outfits for someone!
Not surprisingly, C has a giant summer wardrobe, many items of which have yet to be worn-- especially sundresses. Since she still naps in the mornings, we have found it hard to visit churches since most services are at 9:30 AM. Given that we normally hang around the house most days, that leaves a lot of dresses waiting to make their debut!
I've decided I should just make her a candidate for the most overdressed-for-playing-at-home kid, so the other day I selected a really cute fruit-patterned number that I got at the "upscale" consignment store....which, side note, was Ann Taylor LOFT brand.
(When did LOFT sell baby clothes?? Answer: Apparently back in 2005!)
ANYWAY.
The dress came with matching bloomers so I put those on and then realized I was going to veer in a different direction after all. On went a coordinating green shirt and some fun hot pink sandals. Then, a few minutes later, she added the hat herself. Girl loves herself some hats.
Also, garage doors are cool.

Slip-Sliding Away
As you might recall, the inaugural pool/slide adventure for 2012 did not include Miss C. With the insane heat and humidity we had this weekend, however, she demanded that she have a go!
The BG, who genuinely enjoys doing manual labor in 100 degree heat (WHAT?) had been outside working all day Saturday and offered to get out the pool/slide for the kiddies. Since that would allow me to get my chopping done for dinner (and, um, not have to go outside), the plan sounded just fine to me....even when he asked if we really needed to bother getting her a swimsuit. Nah, my laziness replied.
After awhile, I finally trekked out to take some photos and saw that her non-swim diaper was quite the sight to behold:
She seemed much happier after it was removed:
By the way, this guy got a haircut:
And this girl got sad when Daddy finally dismantled the slide because he was tired of sliding her down:
See, so sad?
But jumping is pretty cool.
