She's Sold!
We were treated to a wonderful overnight visit with Carrie, who came to town earlier this week after abandoning us a few months ago for a return to her Empire State homeland. She arrived ready and eager to SNIFF after all the blog tales of the young sir and his penchant for fragrances. I made the B-man wait all afternoon until after his destructive sister was tucked away in her crib....and then it was showtime!
My favorite birthday twin had a hard time paring down her favorite scents-- it actually was a multi-step process that culminated after breakfast the next morning. Also the next morning? A little girl time with iPads:
BTW, please note the appropriateness of C's outfit. As some of you might recognize, it is part of the Wegmans organic cotton baby collection. I bought it when Brooks was a wee tyke and recently came across it when sorting through clothes, just in time for her to don it when her favorite Weggies-loving Carrie came to visit!
Speaking of Scentsy-- our order of fall scents arrived yesterday and, as I'm sure you can imagine, there's a pretty stoked little boy here. Pretty sure he narrated the contents of the box through his entire quiet time. I keep trying to capture his little sales presentation on video because it's absolutely mind-boggling how much he knows....and his theatrical pronunciations of words not typically used by 4-year olds (like "Mediterranean Spa!") makes it all the more hysterical.
I have yet to dig out any autumnal decorations but I did just dip my toe in the Halloween preps. Here's the warmer that I bought a few months ago for the upstairs:
I love it (and so does Carrie, since she just ordered the same one) but what's even more fun is that you can swap out the wrap part to be festive. So check out what it looks like now:
Okay, I actually packed it back up until October 1st. But I couldn't wait to burn a yummy fall scent-- I wish you could smell the deliciousness that is Caramel Pear Crisp filling our living room as I type!

Ouch-Fueled Questions
One day last week, I went out to get the mail and clearly was thinking about something else as I opened the front door since I opened it right into my forehead. Ouch. I apparently hung onto a few marbles because I immediately thought, "must go get witch hazel ASAP!"
1) Do any of you use witch hazel to prevent bruising?! 'Tis one of the few "old wives tales" (or at least "Sheils tales"!) that I can think of that I follow without question. If you put some on a cotton ball and rub over the place where you've just banged into something, it works its anti-inflammatory magic and often reduces, if not prevents, future swelling.
And seriously-- while my forehead did form a giant goose egg and is still a bit sore to the touch the next week, it never bruised.
Now, later that same day, I bent over to pick up something off the floor and stood back up under the corner of the table. Ouch. I didn't bother to witch hazel it up since my hair would've covered any kind of bruise, but the double-bonk experience led me to ponder a question to pose to my loyal readers:
2) Do you have a "test" that you use after hitting your head to make sure you can still think clearly? Or am I the only weird one? Because, seriously, I always start reciting my multiplication tables to make sure I still know that 9 x 6 = 54, etc.

Applicious
C and I accompanied B's Bears classroom to a local family-owned farm yesterday. While the warm weather up here has wreaked havoc on the crop and prevented the kids from picking apples at the orchard, apples were still the focus of the day. First up? Face painting!

After touring the land, the class got to watch cider being made with a very noisy machine!
Then we went to the other side of the facility and saw apples being sorted in a (much less noisy) machine:
Each kid got a bag o' apples they selected from the sorter:
And they got to bottle cider from the batch they "made"!
Other than the fact I randomly got stung by a bee on the upper palm of my right hand-- I didn't even see the bee-- we had a fun time! Hooray for apples!

The Running Man
Since the kids and I successfully trekked to the gym Saturday morning for me to do an aerobics class, I determined a Mexican food lunch with the BG was in order. So we went up to the school around noon hoping he'd be wrapping up practice.
(And, of course, this is practice for which he left home at 6 AM after getting home at 11:30 PM Friday. How he does it, I still don't understand...)
Turned out the players still had some conditioning work to do. While they were doing some stretches, the B-man decided he'd take a lap. He might be a tall dude for his age, but he's still pretty small for that big track. But off he went.
The guys then got sent on a lap, however. He's that little moving dot being chased by the crowd...and taking a breather as they approach:
He finally decided to take off again after they'd passed, and here he is nearing the finish line. It's so fun that all the high school guys treat him like a beloved mascot. It's not so fun that I had my finger blocking the lens for this whole video...sigh.
We sure love being able to participate like this! (And my cheese enchilada was mighty tasty!)

Friday's Randoms
I'm writing this just minutes before my self-imposed 7:30 AM deadline because I was just treadmilling it up watching the final episode from season one of Homeland on Netflix DVD. I had no idea it was going to be such a long eppy, so I actually haven't finished it yet-- argh!! If you're too cheap to have Showtime like we are, I definitely recommend watching it on DVD. I think it is the quintessential thriller-- you never know what's going to happen next!
I hardly ever turn on the TV during the day, but I was folding clothes the other morning and Good Morning America was interviewing the "plus-size model" who is the first to spearhead a fashion campaign for a major label, in this case Ralph Lauren. I actually had to turn off the TV because of the questions and obvious slant. Listen, I think it's wonderful that they've chosen a non-waif to model clothes. The woman is absolutely gorgeous and looks 10x better in clothes than my ill-proportioned self. But the whole slant they're working is that "she's a size 12 so she should make us all feel better since she's more of an average size." Y'all-- she's 6 foot 2 inches tall. I imagine some of the increased size comes from her increased height! I've worn size 12 pants before and, um, I was (AM) a far lumpier mess than this model. I realize she's getting rich off this whole promotional thing, but if I were her, I'd be kinda annoyed that they all keep pointing out that I'm the same size as a 5 foot 4 inch woman who'd just had a baby and enjoys her food! (at least in my case.... ;-)
Switching gears from TV (although I will say that I wasn't overwhelmed by any of the Thursday night shows that came back last night and find both The New Normal and Go On to be decent entertainment for laundry-folding), I am here to tell you that Miss C has proven herself to be a bit of a hitter. A happy hitter, thankfully (as in, she slaps with a smile), but I'm a little concerned that her aggressive love pats might end up being offered outside the family. I figure some of it could be because she still hasn't broken any barriers with her verbal communication and is just trying to be expressive, but let's all hope it's a quick phase. Sometimes I wonder if it might have been better if I'd had the more physical child first....when I had more time and patience. Who knows. At least she's cute, right?!
And now that I've mentioned folding laundry twice, I will point out that I've finally accepted that fall is here. (Officially starts tomorrow-- woo hoo!!) So there have been LOTS of loads of laundry for the new fall wardrobes for both children. Ah, how I love the anticipation of so many fun outfit combinations!
Egad, it's 7:35 AM. I'm late! But will still take the time to say.....HAPPY FRIDAY!!!

The Breakfast Report
A few food-related tidbits from our weekend...
Saturday morning, I went out and got us some yummy warm bagels for brekkie but I knew I wanted to turn it up a notch for Sunday morning. Thanks to my hunt around Pinterest, I came up with two recipes to try:
Apple Cinnamon Pull-Apart Bread
and Crockpot Breakfast Casserole:
I would definitely make each of them again, but with the following notes:
1) For the (time intensive due to double-rise) bread, MAKE MORE GOO!! The whole loaf was devoured within the hour but would have been even yummier if the filling had been increased, perhaps even doubled.
2) For the (who doesn't love breakfast being ready in the morning?) crockpot casserole, don't dump all the cheese on the top as directed. We recommend splitting it into at least 2 layers. Also, it called for both sausage and bacon which just was way too fussy for me so I decided to stick with only sausage. I should have gone ahead and doubled the amount, however, because it was kinda sparsely distributed.
Shout-out again to the BG for his tremendous help with rolling out the giant dough rectangle for me. And definitely to AKHG, whose assistance scooping out some flour really made the bread! ;-)

Pseudo-Reunion
I am happy to report that Casa Kentobean is fully functional for multiple-friend gatherings!! Indeed, we hosted 3 adults and 2 kids this weekend and didn't even feel a bit crowded while doing it! Such an improvement over our wee dungeon box of yesteryear!
In honor of our 15th anniversary of high school graduation (and since there was no reunion organized), four of us some months ago planned a girls weekend. Of course, due to the reality of life, it was actually necessary for it to be a girls + kids weekend, which greatly changed the activities and conversation, as you might imagine!! When this picture was taken at the 10th reunion in 2007, only the B-man (percolating in the belly) was on the scene. Now we have 5.5 kids, with the 6th due to arrive next month.

I didn't "steal his soul by taking a photograph" (sigh) of the BG, but he deserves a huge shout-out for being Chief Babysitter Saturday night so we could escape for a yummy adults-only Italian feast:

There was plenty o' chatting, eating (I took a Weight Watchers weekend hiatus...we'll see how that goes! ;-), and just soaking in of familiarity. We even went to a local Ukranian festival for an adventure because, you know, why not?!
Anne and Julie each arrived Friday night so the kids and I went to the BG's game only for the first half. It was tied at halftime but ended up being a bit more lopsided with the Rams on the losing end. Tough (though not unexpected) loss....but the kick-off to a wonderful weekend!

Adventuring
We have had absolutely gorgeous weather the last couple of days so I knew I needed to take the kids somewhere yesterday afternoon to enjoy it. I decided to go to the nearest park since I could see on the website there was a playground. I figured we'd go from there.
Turns out it's mostly an athletic complex (in fact, the BG used to play softball there 6 or 7 years ago) with lots of fields, courts, and even a dog park. The playground itself wasn't great for small tykes so we ended up wandering around the facility and checking things out. As someone who frankly finds being outside with the children (with no one else to talk to) somewhat boring, I was thrilled that we had a fun adventure that took up a good 90 minutes!

And a whole lot of hair-raising fun!

Expert Preschooler
It's his 3rd year. He's pretty much a Preschool Master by now! ;-)
Unfortunately, we no longer have a good "first day of school tree" in our front yard. Or, perhaps more accurately, all our trees are farther away from the door than I was willing to go yesterday morning while trying to stay on schedule! But here's a look back at the last 2 first days:
He's not wearing a backpack in the 2012 pic because they don't allow them! I was actually quite relieved since that kept me from having to buy one! He'd gotten 2 as presents when he was born and we'd used one the first year and the other the second year!! Yay frugality!!
They're starting with a month of color days so the first day of class was RED day. Sister joined him in the celebration....until she decided to squirt shampoo all over herself later that morning and got changed into a nice green and brown combo!
By all accounts, he had a fab first day!! Wednesdays are his show and tell days so we have to figure out something for him to take to the next class. I'm sure no one is surprised that he wants to take in "just one!" Scentsy sample scent!!
(I will not be allowing this.)

The Big News
Sure, the BG's team scored the game-winning touchdown in the last few seconds of the match-up Friday night. And yes, it was the first victory since 2010.
BUT
the REAL news is that someone kept a bow (headband) in her hair for HOURS!!! ;-)
Even though Miss C goes to bed at 6:30 and that's when the game started, I packed 'em up, along with a bag full of snacks, and headed to the stadium. The stands are quite small and home and visitors are all on one side, so it was a good thing we were playing another small school that didn't have a ton of fans. We had plenty of space around us for the kids to be a bit wiggly.
By the time the 2nd quarter was drawing to a close, I decided to pack it up and head home. The first half was insanely penalty-ridden and was taking forever. I did want to get a soft pretzel from the concession stand for the ride home, however, so I herded them down there to get my treat. B wanted popcorn (news flash! took the kid 4.5 years, but he will now eat popcorn!!!) so we ended up sitting down on this circular bench for a spell:

A really active booster mom was leaning up against the fence watching the game and she ended up helping me entertain the kids. Thanks to her generosity, we were able to stay to see that game-winning touchdown--which was at 9:15 (OOF). A lot of the HS moms keep reminding me that it's fun for them to spend time with "little kids" (especially since they can give them back!) and I'm so thankful for the parental community support that allowed us to be there for the big win!!
(BTW, I'm not exactly sure I'm proud of my tactics, but I convinced the bow-wearer to keep it on by repeatedly pointing to it and saying "PRETTY"!! She may still be uninterested in saying much of anything, but she sure does understand everything. Girl just wants to be pretty-- whatcha gonna do?)

Status Check
It cracks me up that the number of votes for making beds every day increased significantly later in the day. What, are you all too busy making beds in the morning to read blogs, so it becomes an afternoon task?! :-)
Truth: I've been limited all summer to 4 hours of work/week for my part-time employer (previous full-time employer pre-kids) but, due to a big project deadline, I've put in 12 hours between Monday and Wednesday alone. I've been working through naptimes, going to bed super late each night and frankly am amazed I managed to do errands yesterday, let alone pick up the house for the babysitter (!!!) who came to stay with the kids last night while the BG and I went to Back-to-School Night at B's new preschool.
The BG did not dally in pointing out on our way home that most of the other parents in the Bears class (how cool is that? SIC 'EM!) were there in a one parent per kid fashion, rather than as a couple. But you know what? I found it important for him to at least make an appearance and start from the beginning with an understanding of this new program since, let's face it, he'll probably never be free to go to anything again all year! It was totally worth the money to pay our first high school babysitter (!!!) in order to attend. Too bad she's a cheerleader and can't hook me up with Friday night childcare so Camille can stay home and sleep during football games. Still not sure how that's going to work out...
I'm quite excited about this new educational adventure. We had a wonderful experience the last two years at our church's preschool, but it's already clear this preschool (also at a UMC church) is much more organized and well-thought-out. B will be going MWF for a "full day," which in preschool terms is 9:15 AM - 1:50 PM. While my wallet isn't super pumped about the huge increase in monthly tuition, I know he's going to have so much fun!!

I found it important for him to at least make an appearance and start from the beginning with an understanding of this new program since, let's face it, he'll probably never be free to go to anything again all year! It was totally worth the money to pay our first high school babysitter (!!!) in order to attend. Too bad she's a cheerleader and can't hook me up with Friday night childcare so Camille can stay home and sleep during football games. Still not sure how that's going to work out...
I'm quite excited about this new educational adventure. We had a wonderful experience the last two years at our church's preschool, but it's already clear this preschool (also at a UMC church) is much more organized and well-thought-out. B will be going MWF for a "full day," which in preschool terms is 9:15 AM - 1:50 PM. While my wallet isn't super pumped about the huge increase in monthly tuition, I know he's going to have so much fun!!
Now....if only I could figure out how to keep my toddler from destroying the entire house so I can actually be productive during the hours of only having one child at home. Not really holding out much hope for that, however!

The Excitement Builds!
Since it wasn't super sunny (maybe I'm a vampire b/c I REALLY don't like to be in the sun), I decided to take the kids to the game Saturday afternoon. We arrived near the beginning of the 2nd quarter to find a broken scoreboard and no way to determine how bad the expected blowout already was.
Imagine my surprise when a mother excitedly told me it was 13-6! And then we watched as the Rams played amazingly well and actually were within 2 pts (20-18) in the 3rd quarter! Sooo awesome for the little team that went 0-10 last year now playing one of the biggest teams around.
Unfortunately, our lack of depth (remember, we only have 35 on the roster and they had something like 70+) slowed things down and the game ended 41-18. We had actually left at the beginning of the 4th quarter, the kids absolutely soaked from the heat and humidity, but loved getting to see the team off to a good start!
We think this game really amped up the excitement for the season. Good job, Coach BG!!
