Saturday Stroll

The BG was away at a track meet all day Saturday so, after our now-traditional (3 weeks in the making-- I say that's a tradition) early morning trip to the Bagel Bin for breakfast and the grocery store for stocking up, I checked in with Geoff & Nicki to see if they might be free for some company.  An adventure 30 minutes down the road with some fun peeps sounded like a wonderful way to pass the long day!

It was really chilly on Saturday so the kids and I arrived in our stocking caps to stroll around town.  We were quite a contrast to many other people roaming around who had come for the annual croquet match between the two local colleges and were all wearing pastel and bow ties (men) and summer cocktail dresses and giant hats!!

First stop was a place you might just see on the big screen sometime in the future!   The kids didn't look at the camera because they were too busy watching all the crew building the set inside:

Aunt Nicki actually had croquet-appropriate headgear and a certain little scamp tried it out!

Ah, spring weather.  Warm one day and then in the 50s the next, so overcast you can't even see the boats in the water at the end of the street behind us!

And I can't even remember the last time B fell asleep in the car--all that truckin' around town must've done him in!

Coordinated

The (newly) 15-month old wee lady in our house already seems more intent on solving mechanical issues than her 4-year old brother.  Pretty sure each parent "got" one kid and it does not line up along the sexes!  :-)

We had her appointment yesterday and she continues to be greater than 95th percentile in height.  She was 32.75 inches and weighed 22 lbs, 5 oz, which was definitely above 50th percentile but still less than her brother weighed at this stage....but she just seems so much more solid.  Who knows.

As physically fit as she is, the real coordination to which I'm referring is of the color variety! I realized yesterday that I'd--quite by accident--dressed us as if we should get our picture taken.  So we did.  On auto-timer with the camera perched on the ledge, not with any actual artistic intention or planning!

One thing is for sure-- that blinking light caught the attention of the wee ones, at least most of the time!

I started to worry that the little miss may not ever be a smiler, but then I got this one:

And then, when her brother started spinning the chair, she really let loose!

HAPPY FRIDAY!!!!

Insert Every Single "Up and Down" Cliche Here

A quick real estate update:

Just a few days after the first contract fell through, we received another full-price offer.  The inspection was a breeze.  Slight setback when the HOA property visit resulted in us spending some serious $ on redoing part of our driveway that was deemed to be a "maintenance violation" but we got through that.  Then we had the appraisal.  And waited.  And waited.  And waited.

The buyers are using a VA (veterans, not Virgina) loan and VA appraisals are known for being very strict since it's 100% financing.  We got the call late Friday night that the appraisal came in....gulp....more than 10% lower than the agreed-upon selling price.

Cue a bit of an emotional breakdown.

Without getting into all the harrowing details, I'm happy to report that we are super excited about the whole situation moving forward because, as of Monday, we are now under contract on a fabulous house that we got for a really good deal....which helps assuage the anguish of not getting as much as we expected on our sale.    Indeed, it's really happening!   Barring any issues with its inspection or appraisal, we are closing May 29th.   It's only 10 minutes from the BG's school, has just been completely updated, and actually is on 1.1 acres which, for this part of the country, is insane!

(We are going forward with the sale on this house and have to be out by June 15th, so we have two weeks of overlap to move.)

We know that the peace we now feel about this whole experience--especially amidst the insane roller coaster of drama and emotions--can only come from above.  Thanks be to a loving God who watches over us!  And thanks to so many of you who have been supportive and encouraging through the process, as well!

Meeting Up With the Angelenos

Geoff has been in the general area for a couple of weeks now, but Nicki just arrived this past weekend to join him for the remaining 7-ish weeks of the cinematic adventure.   She was able to take a leave of absence from her job in LA and she's going to work on the film production wherever she can be used.

We were able to meet up with them briefly on Sunday afternoon at...where else?  Dunkin' Donuts!  I gotta say:  it was the most pleasant bunch of employees I have ever seen.  They gave the kids free munchkins, appeared with a free sprinkle donut within 5 seconds of Camille accidentally walking into a glass wall (she was fine), and then gave B these fun balloons, which appear to be like thundersticks but were called "balloons"!    (Susan, it was the one right by your house-- highly recommended!!)

Not surprisingly, we were kept busy by wandering children but I did manage to snap one quick shot of Aunt Nicki with Brooks and his balloons!!

We hope we'll get to see them more while they're here....but who knows how crazy busy things will get on a movie set?!

Coming Out of His Shell

The BG dutifully told me (as I do love to be apprised of all interesting school goings-on) that he'd recently been visited by a student reporter writing an article for the school newspaper about the BG's new coaching position.  He mentioned that there had been photographs taken, as well.

Last Friday, he came home with the paper.  Turns out a part of our family did indeed make a photographic splash-- on the front page, no less.  But it wasn't the BG.  His photo-less article was at the back:

But THIS GUY was right on top, sans feet and all!

(Stumpy got relegated to the classroom after the stager actually wrote on our checklist: "remove turtle for house showings."  Ha!  Did she really think I would just leave him out for onlookers?!)

Big Birthday

A very special reader celebrates an exciting milestone today. I've told her countless times that ALL THE COOL PEEPS are greater than or equal to 30!! Sure hope that message is received successfully today...in Boston!

This is going to be the best decade ever, PP!! Happy day to you!!

It's THAT Day!

The one where I have absolutely nothing to show for our current life so I am thankful I took a picture of a picture back when I was in Dallas last month so I'd have something to blather about:

Dear 2001 me,

It actually makes me happy to see that many of my dental insecurities of 2012 were present 11 years ago (when I apparently didn't care so much)-- even my one eyelid didn't open quite as far as the other back then, too!  Of course, I was also at my most slender when I was you although I know I probably complained about my hips and thighs even then...along with all the pressure I was under to write an Honors Thesis, get As in all my classes, plan a wedding, spend time with my separated-by-2-hours fiance, etc, etc.  Real-world problems, all of them.  Clearly.  (Hint:  you don't lose your sarcastic bent over the years.)

Even then, you knew you wanted to hit the East Coast for grad school, but--let's be honest--you have NO idea what you'll study.  Guess what?  Eleven years later, you're still in your eastern land, although you still don't have any tangible skills, save for writing a daily blog that only occasionally leans on the crutch of old bridal portraits.

Is it still hard to believe that you ended up finding a Baylor Bear spouse, just as your parents and several cousins did?  Turns out that guy, as sometimes-frustratingly committed to helping the lives of kids at school that he is, is the best father to your own kids that you could imagine.  And you'll never believe this, but he eventually gives up and starts wearing shorts AND flip-flops!  And loves international cuisines!  And even other people!!!  :-)

I think you already know you won't be a "kid person."  You didn't grow up around babies and, while you always assumed you'd have some (and secretly hoped they'd be little nerds like you are!), you don't really know what you'll do with them.  Give yourself about 6.5 years to "thaw" to the idea of parenthood.  Pssst:  the first one turns out to have so many Moore-like tendencies that it's pretty breezy....until he decides around the age of 4 to start testing limits.  I'm not sure you know how little patience you have, but 2001 me, start praying now for more of it!

You're wondering how leaving college will weaken friendships.  You're wondering if you've already spent too many years away from treasured Corning friends.  You have no idea how the internet and social media will create so many fabulous outlets for your obsessed-with-information-self that you could end up writing a blog post like this for loyal readers, two of whom have been friends long enough to remember how you worried so much about being caught without a hall pass, and each of whom has lived close enough since then for regular visits.  And it only takes one return trip to Texas to be reminded that the friends who brought wine coolers to your 21st birthday now not only think those drinks are as disgusting as you do, but also laugh and cry with you over more appropriate beverages for 30-somethings.   And the memories of the super-bed, the interpretive dancing, the functions-- those memories aren't going anywhere.  Kinda like your hips and thighs.

2001 me, even in 2012, you won't have any idea what's coming next.  You'll learn that selling a house is way more stressful than blithely buying your first one, and you'll still spend way too much time wondering/worrying about what your next one will look like.  And what memories will happen there.  They're destined not all to be happy ones, but they can all be meaningful ones if you let them. Try to relax.  Actually-- right now, walk to the stairway of your apartment, Village I #3210, and read the Mary Engelbreit print that says:  "Worrying does not empty tomorrow of its troubles; it empties today of its strength."   And then recite that to yourself every day for the next 11 years.

Oh, and that brother of yours?  Yeah- he's going to do WAY cooler things than you will!  But there's only one All-American in the family...

Lovies,
emk

At Least It Was Exciting For SOME People

(just not the ones paying for it):

Good thing we no longer have an "uneven, pitted driveway."  Surely now we can get that HOA letter of compliance....!!!!??

Translator in Training

I am really not good at the "getting up, showered, and dressed before the kids are awake" thing-- even though I tell myself every day that I should do that. Usually I stay gross until a nap time break, but I knew I couldn't put it off yesterday morning.  I handed the already-awake B my phone so he could go through the camera roll of photos while I took a quick shower.

When I got out, I saw that he'd quickly abandoned my phone for a more interesting source of entertainment and that he was working hard on his newest love: Spanish vocabulary.  Ah, our little Baboo.  Always such a character.

Telling It Like It Is

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ANNE!!!

Don't Be Alarmed...

...I'm going to talk crafts.

I know.

Our realtor sends a stager to come out to the house and tell you everything you should do to make things look more appealing.   Our list was plenty long but high on it was something that we always knew we needed to fix but just didn't know where to start:  the big blank wall in our living room.

It seems I can't find a pic of it (likely because its emptiness is so vast that it would never be captured!) but many of you have been here, sat on our red couch, and probably thought to yourself, "Why in the world have they not hung something on that wall?"

Whether you've been here or not, you should know by now that we're pretty darn cheap.  The thought of purchasing an oversized work of art to fill the space was enough to give me the shivers.  And I never was going to give in to the BG's suggestion of a mounted flat-screen TV.

But thanks to StS (that's "Stacey the Stager" per Anne and her famed nicknames), we were able to decorate the wall on the cheap.  Behold:

How in the WORLD did we find artwork that matched the color scheme so well??

Well-- we bought some plain canvases and stapled fabric around it.  Yup.  That's it.  Total price for the three?  $20!

Happy Friday (the 13th)!

Represent!

The kids and I stopped at a local park near a house that had just popped up in our general search area.  Check out that graffiti on the building--  yeah!  214, the area code for Dallas!  It's like the taggers knew how to get me to move into the neighborhood!   :-)

We're Going to Miss This Guy

I'm not sure that 10 straight days of the BG being home over Spring Break makes up for all the times he's busy, but it sure goes a long way!

Bummed that it's back to reality for us all.  Guess I should figure out how to be productive again.  But, really, it just doesn't sound like much fun...

Eggstraordinary Fun!

I mean, if you're gonna have a fun weekend house guest, why wouldn't you also invite FAC (and unpictured FUE) over to help celebrate the season by coloring Easter eggs?

Indeed, Geoff is spending the next 2 months in our fair state working on an exciting movie project, so we were thrilled that he could pop on over for the weekend.  Someone else was pretty darn excited about those Easter eggs, too:

Due to multiple cases of sniffles, nap schedules, etc, I determined that I'd represent our clan at church and might as well get up at 5:15 AM (!!!) to meet Christy and Eric at the sunrise church service.   Since I was the only one to leave the house, we are without the traditional "kids in gussied-up garb" photos.  In true Baylor fashion, however, I still put decent clothes on them so at least it would look like they'd gone to church....then we went to the Memorial Cafeteria for lunch...ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!!!!!!!

(I know you're all wishing you'd spent time in Waco and got the joke!  ;-)

Anyway-- the little miss just loves any new adventure:

It was in the 30s when I went to the (outdoor) early service; while it did warm up later, we still had some strong breezes.  She didn't mind, of course.  After a practice indoor hunt with plastic eggs, we all trekked out to hunt the real eggs dyed by the squad the night before.

Ooh!  One on top of the T-ball stand:

This guy couldn't get enough of the hunting!

Someone sure looks up to her uncle Geoff!

 Shadowy sibs:

We sure hope we're going to have more family bonding time over the next couple of months!  Aunt Nicki will be arriving next weekend-- she's getting to come work on the movie, too!

End of an Era

Found out at the dentist yesterday that I have my first cavity.

Moment of silence, please.

Turns out that I didn't get much sympathy on this development.  One loyal reader even went as far as to say email "Poor baby" in a decidedly un-sympathetic tone.  It was quite rude.  But she is a master at creating fun nicknames, so we'll let her stick around.

Seriously, though, it's like I'm having an identity crisis.  If I'm not The One Without the Cavities, who am I?

I guess just The One Who Didn't Floss Enough.

Wah wah.

Happy Friday!

Family Gathering

We flew into Manchester, NH on Saturday morning and were picked up by Big D, his brother Marc, and sister-in-law, Lorry.  We then headed (in two cars) to Portsmouth which is such a cute town and definitely provided one of those times when I wished we didn't have kids around so we could explore!

The purpose of our Portsmouth jaunt was to meet up with Marc and Lorry's two sons (the BG's first cousins, if you're following along), who are both mid-20s and live in Boston.  They drove up with their girlfriends to meet us at the Portsmouth Brewery where the group ate, drank, and laughed for several hours!

Not being a beer person, I was the only adult who didn't sample the wide array of local brews.  I tried to stay local, though, but found this raspberry lemonade to be shocking in its carbonation. The B-man had a sip and was so traumatized by the bubbles that he tried to swat the bottle out of my hand every time I had some.  I think he thought I was going to die.

Short people in front-- and there weren't very many of us!!

We are now back home after a wonderful adventure.  Yay for still having 5 days of Spring Break!

More Adventures

If you can't go up in a plane, you might as well go for a ride on a lawn tractor!

In case anyone's wondering, the little miss has been enjoying herself dressing as a World War I soldier:

"Niner Niner 2-5-4"

Or at least that's what B has been saying his Great-Uncle Marc's plane is called.

I guess, however, that the B-man just wants to give a shout-out to Waco (area code 254) since, as you can see, Uncle Marc's plane is actually Niner-Niner-2-5-3!

Any way it's called-- it's pretty cool!  Look at all those buttons!!

Cleared for take-off!  (Although they didn't actually...)

We're Having a Granite Old Time!

Greetings from New Hampshire, where we are trying to Live Free so we don't Die. This is the BG's spring break so we decided to scoot on up here to visit his aunt and uncle for a few days. When Big Daddy got wind of our plans, he decided to fly in from Austin and join the fun!

Los hombres (B is really in a Spanish phase right now) got to check out Uncle Marc's airplane yesterday so I will have pics of that to share when I have a sec to get them off my camera. And seriously, as I'm typing this paragraph, B woke up in the other room talking about "el camion" and "el helicoptero"!

Off to the local library this AM and then a children's science museum in neighboring Vermont this afternoon!

PS: so many shouts-out to Cousin (Mama) Bear and Grammie for humoring me with cupcake guesses!!! The correct flavors (L to R): Almond Joy, Mint Oreo, Raspberry Red Velvet, and Vanilla Buttercream, which is always B's selection.

He is clearly not my son.
