Free At Last!

Let's just say that I survived the two flights with a "one adult to two children" ratio and move on.   Let's also say that I was in bed by 7:30 pm!!

The kiddies were SO excited to spend some time outside after many, many hours on a plane (and a 25 degree morning):

FREEDOM!!!

"Pineconing" with Uncle Geoff's trucks. (Oh, to have a fenced-in backyard!  This kid would've played there for hours!)

And an appropriately Tex-Mex first dinner with my favorite blogging cousin and her bear cubs (not pictured since they, along with mine, were all under a nearby table having a 2nd cousin pow-wow):

Let the overeating begin!

Brrrrr.....and Lame

We took a family walk down to the tot lot on Saturday where we soon realized that 42 degrees plus a ton of wind was, in fact, not ideal playground conditions!  But the little miss had some good adventures with the Big Guy before we gave up and headed back home:

Don't worry-- no one is hobbled.  I just mean that it's lame that I don't have anything better to show for the weekend.  I could show you all our very "thinned-out and organized" closets but I never let you see the messes before (think Monica Gellar, people!) so it wouldn't be quite so powerful.   It's kinda stinky that I can spend hours and hours on closets, vanity storage, and a file cabinet and have absolutely nothing in front of closed doors to show for it except for exhaustion!  But hey-- at least I know none of those things will be the reason someone doesn't want to buy our little box!!

Also lame:  my posts this week.  Fair warning.  I'll try my best but things are about to get super busy!!   Don't give up on me, though!

Enjoy the week!

Wise Words

We received this book at some point over the Olivia-loving years, but B has really gotten into it recently.  It's full of "inspirational" quotes by "famous" people and he's just busting 'em out all the time now.   The kid cracks us up.

(The video cut off the first few seconds so insert the words "It ain't" right before he starts with "bragging"):

Improvements

The first thing we did after deciding to go forward with putting our house on the market was to update our cabinets and countertops.  We'd painted the existing cabinets white when we moved in but eight years of use had led to them being pretty grungy.  We always thought it was bizarre that there was one patch of butcher block instead of the laminate counter; while nice in theory, it was covered in mildewy spots we couldn't clean so we just kept a wooden cutting board on that section at all times.  The laminate itself was a really odd grayish brown (with some pink tinge) that was peeling up around the edges and looked generally yucky.

Our realtor is doing some improvements on her own house and gave us the name of the contractor with whom she'd been working.   Within a few days, we had cabinet and counter samples brought to us and had the work done within 2 weeks.  It was crazy fast, but we felt like (at the realtor's initial suggestion), it was a valid project for increasing the quality of our little box.

Before:

After:

(That wooden support piece in the background was just temporary, FYI)

I hadn't really asked a lot of questions about the specifics since, ideally, we won't be making use of these for too awfully long.  So I was thrilled when I realized they put in a corner cabinet!  Oh my goodness!   I can fit so many more pantry items in there...and actually be able to SEE them!  (Note to people who have not been here:  we don't have a pantry and are restricted to the space in these cabinets for all our non-perishables.)

The way the timing of that crazy week worked out, the realtor's stager came the very next day to walk around and give us a checklist of all the things we needed to do to get the house ready.  (Cue panic.  And did I mention it was also C's 1st birthday that day?  Whatever-- she's a second child!)   She looked around and said, "Kitchen looks great but I think you should paint over the blue."

Ugh.

Let me just compact the last several weeks into this statement: after lots of conversations with many people, and ultimately the decision-maker this past weekend with our realtor, we have decided NOT to paint.   I do think it would probably look nicer if it were a neutral color, but not worth the effort (or money in this case since we'd be hiring a painter).   I mean, if the first 10 people who come in here walk right out and say they're not buying it because of the blue walls, we'll reconsider.  But I imagine the yellow tub in the bathroom will be more of an issue.

That's another story.

(We have a lot going on.)

(And we're still hiring a painter....but for other issues.)

ANYWAY.  We have an updated kitchen-- hooray!!     And in all our cleaning out, I just came across this photo and thought I'd throw it on here for a big ole belly laugh...

Ready?

This was what it looked like when we moved in!!!!

PS:  HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the most loyal blog reader (and grammar-warrior) out there:  GRAMMIE!!!  Big birthday wishes to her "twin," Karen B, as well!!!

Friday's Randoms

--How are we already in the second half of February?!

--I feel like I'm always shocked by how old celebrities are when I have reason to learn of their age (like when they die), but I gotta say:  I would've told you Whitney Houston was older than 48.

--Last night might have been the first time ever that Mr. B ate everything on his dinner plate when it was actually what was on my dinner plate, too.  Kid loves himself some cheese ravioli (with butter, not sauce of course) and broccoli.  Had two (small) helpings of each.  Nevermind that he was sent to bed 2 hours early the previous night for not even being willing to take a bite of chicken.

--When he got sent to bed, he also lost the "privilege" of Raffie.  Turns out he slept just fine.  So he doesn't have his beloved giraffe tonight, either.  There might be some talk of his other beloved (aka Munchkins) as a reward if he keeps up this Raffie-shunning.  While I imagine the dentist and doctor will cheer the demise of lovie-induced thumb-sucking, they probably wouldn't be thrilled at my choice of incentives!

--While we're on the subject, I'm thrilled to announce that, after 4 years, my child will now eat eggs.  After refusing to try them in any capacity, he now loves 'em scrambled.  Can't even tell you how happy that makes us.  Now, about that chicken...

--His little sister was surprisingly a bit anemic at her 12-month appointment.  It doesn't really make sense since she was on formula and also eating cereal, but that's the deal.  She's now getting a daily dose of vitamins with iron mixed into her cereal-- man, that stuff is vile.  Thank goodness she's a fairly indiscriminate eater!

--I pulled the trigger and e-filed our tax returns yesterday.   I'm a big fan of the annual Turbo Tax process, but then I always wait forever to hit the "file" button.  I'd say it's similar to how I never put away laundry after I fold it, but I'm not generally worried that the clothesmakers are going to audit me!

--Anne and Adam are on a cruise this week (the same ship where Norovirus hit last week!) and it's very bizarre not to exchange emails with her on a daily basis.   I also have no idea whether they're having fun in the sun....or yuckiness in the belly.   How did we LIVE before instant communication???!

HAPPY FRIDAY!!!

What Comes Next?

A lot of nervous hand-wringing and a lot of prayer.

Over the holidays--and before we even knew there would be a head coaching opportunity opening up--we decided that it would be best for our little family to make a move closer to the BG's school.  Maybe someday I'll enumerate all the entries on a "con" list for such a geographic change (because they are plentiful!), but we are confident in the value of family time that trumps all.

When the BG took a job at a new school 3 years ago, he increased his commute by about 15 minutes each way.  Even at 35 minutes without traffic, the drive is not that bad for living in a sprawling metro area-- and there's definitely never traffic at 5:50 AM when he leaves!   The problem is more on the other end.  As of now, he is the head coach for a sport each of the three seasons.   He also currently has a full teaching load of 5 science classes with something like 150 students.  It's not like he gets to sit at a desk and stare at a computer screen like so many of us would do at work, either!  (I have no idea how he doesn't crash.)

Some nights, like tonight, he has an evening meeting and it just isn't feasible to come home in between because of the distance.  So, as happens fairly often, he'll be gone for probably 15-16 hours....and really should go straight to bed when he does get home since the alarm clock will be ringing at 4:45 AM tomorrow.  Tomorrow night, he has chaperone duty at back-to-back basketball games, although he probably would've chosen to stay anyway since the head coach of the most visible school activity is expected to maintain an active presence in all aspects of the school community.

Please know I am not trying to start a game of "he is busier than (insert name here)"!!  I have no doubt we'd lose.  But right now, we're also losing so many opportunities to spend time together and he's only going to become busier with his exciting new role.  The B-man is at an age where he would love the chance to go hang out at "school and work" with his daddy, and if we were closer, the BG could come home after practice, have dinner with us, and take B back with him to an evening event.  And/or we could go up to the school to support him and become more involved with the school community which, let's be honest, totally makes me happy since I pretty much peaked in high school and adore the environment!  :-)  We very rarely make the trek over there for games and such since rush hour traffic plus that long of a drive equals not much fun!

So that's where we are.   Any of you who have tried to get a house ready to be put on the market with two wee children underfoot can understand why I'm usually rocking back and forth in the corner by the end of the day.   I'm not sure how it's all going to come together, but I know that it will.    We've made major progress in the Great De-Cluttering Adventure of 2012 but it still feels like there are miles to go.  And don't even get me started on how we're moving to an even more high-priced area and may have to live in an actual box versus this "box" of a house we've enjoyed (but complained about) for 8 years.

Ah, the great unknowns of adulthood.  Thank the Lord for His faithfulness in which we put our trust-- I'd already be in the loony bin without it!

More to come...

Fun with Piggie and Gerald

(Okay, it's actually "Elephant and Piggie" but that's not what we say around here!)

B has really gotten into this series of books by Mo Willems.  We got one as a present awhile back but it wasn't until the last couple of months that we started reading it.  Then we checked one out from the library and the obsession kicked into high gear.  He pretty much memorizes them after one introduction and is very dramatic in his "reading" of each story!!

When I learned that a branch in our library system was hosting a pre-Valentines Elephant & Piggie party, I knew it would be a really fun evening adventure for the Brookster and his mama.  So we drove across the county and, once again, simply marveled at the free offerings of this library system!!

One wall of the room was lined with books from the series ready to check out:

The session's events:

Do you think he had a good time?

 Posing with "Gerald" and "Piggie":

After the event, we hung around the library for a bit to read our new books.  As we left, B spotted the two librarians formerly known as his friends Piggie and Gerald, except they were out of their costumes by then.  He thought that was SO funny!!

Happy Day O' Love

From this guy:

And his little sister, who isn't exchanging Valentines with anyone and apparently is unsmiling because of it!

PS:  And a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to my favorite blogging cousin, Mama Bear!!!

Thirty-Three...Thousand Calories

I started to feel a little congested/yucky on Friday but was determined to rally to spend my Saturday birthday night with some of my favorite peeps.  Well, that and I knew there was my very own giant serving of homemade-by-Helen chocolate mousse (with Grand Marnier, no less) waiting for me:

And...I may or may not have already had apricot sour cream scones for breakfast, sushi for lunch, and fried mozzarella/caesar salad/shrimp linguine for dinner before we even got to the mousse!

Birthdays are always better when surrounded by dear friends!!

BREAKING NEWS

It is with a heavy heart that I announce that I will no longer be married to the BG, Assistant Football Coach.

As you can imagine, it's been a stressful few weeks full of many emotions.

THANK GOODNESS I've already found new love.   He seems like a pretty cool guy, too. And the best part is that he's a Varsity HEAD Football Coach:

Yay, tall guy who lives here!!    GO (new and improved) RAMS!!!

Keepin' It Blogged

I often am teased by people closest to me about the seriousness with which I approach my daily blog posting schedule, especially when there are a million other things swirling around and I'm trying to figure out something to write amidst the chaos.

Here's the thing: the sense of interconnectedness that this electronic endeavor has created makes it all worthwhile. For instance, yesterday's post led to me receiving at least 5 related emails, texts, and/or FB messages, separate from the blog comments themselves. As someone who thrives on communicating with people, I can't imagine closing that door to interaction!

(Ironically, I'm pecking out this blog entry on my phone from under my covers at 7:10 this morning because I didn't have anything planned to post. Ha.)

BIG day-early Happy Birthday shout-out to Carrie!!!! Happy Friday, all!

What's (almost) Four Weeks Late for Four?

B's 3-year old check-up last year was scheduled for what turned out to be C's induction date.  Needless to say, it got pushed back.   Thanks to pesky "wait 12 months" insurance rules and busy calendars, we couldn't get in for his 4-year check-up until yesterday.

Yes, being not only late but also in a completely different month kills me.

I'm working on my issues.

Only problem is that I seem to have, um, lots of issues.  And it seems as though our first-born might have inherited many of them.  (OR...are these learned behaviors because he spends most of his time with me?  Discuss.)

Probably many of you also complete online questionnaires ahead of well-check appointments where you're asked about an array of activities that may or may not be expected to be common for your child's age.  (Of course, they don't tell you what's what so that is anxiety-inducing for perfectionists...oh, look!  Another of my issues!)

These questionnaires succeed every time in making me feel like the laziest mother ever.  Wait-- I'm supposed to be making him do interlocking piece puzzles?  Sorry, we've been memorizing the states in our non-interlocking US puzzle map. OOPS.

Wait, he's supposed to be buttoning and unbuttoning?   Yeah, generally we're in too much of a hurry when getting dressed to practice that kind of thing.  OOPS.

He's supposed to be drawing actual people?  That look like people?  With body parts and/or facial features?  Hmm--- I've never asked him to do that because I'm not inclined to art and he's not shown interest the times I've tried to encourage it.  (Grounds for a whole other post about why my kid is already in his second year of preschool-- so someone else can do all those art projects with him!  :-)  OOPS.

In any case, "supposed to" is the wrong wording because the doctor wasn't really concerned about any of these things. She gave me some suggestions for ways to work on his fine motor skills, and then she had him squeeze her hands repeatedly.  Diagnosis?  A weak grip.  The only other time I've ever heard "grip" discussed was when I did some aptitude testing in high school and they tested my grip as part of their college-recommendation services.  I was advised not to go to a fast-paced school (where they "work hard and play hard") because I'd probably just be worn out.

So yes, he's definitely my child.  Sorry, little buddy-- but we can get tough together!  We're going to need it to deal with that sister of yours who definitely will not have grip issues!!!

(Oh, for the statistically-minded among you, he grew 3 inches and gained 4 pounds this past year, making him 42.5" tall and weighing 36.5 lbs.)

Mirror Images

On the nights that I give C a bath, I'm always struck by how happy she looks when we smile at ourselves in the mirror on the way out.  I decided to grab the camera the other night and pretty much failed at properly-aimed self-portraits, but I still kinda liked these:

It was totally the wrong lens and blurry to boot, but oh well.  For the camera-peeps among you: Ian helped me score a great deal on a 17-50 f/2.8 lens for Christmas but it's REALLY heavy so I had recently put on the 50 f/1.8 just to make it lighter.  Not really ideal for this particular project!  :-)

Of Dogs and Giraffes

Turns out that there's a new animal in town, and she's not even a giraffe.   No, indeed, the little miss has made her selection and clearly favors a certain Dalamation lovie.  (Which, per our verbal tendencies, we obviously add an 'ie' to the end and pronounce "Dal-may-shee"!)

I figured I'd pop down and get a pic of the young sir preparing to start his nap, as well.  You'll notice some familiar spots still hanging out with him:

Hope you all had a lovely weekend....full of naps!!!

Weekly Wrap-Up

I haven't taken pictures in days. Grammie being here this week has allowed me to schedule all kinds of appointments and errand-running so we haven't done much of excitement, unless you count a trip to Sam's Club yesterday at just the right time for samples!! (which I totally do!)

I'm sure you're relieved to know that my triglycerides are low and I am still 5 feet, 4.5 inches tall. (first physical in 3 years). The B-man is happily living it up in preschool (parent/teacher conference). HomeGoods has rearranged its kid section (solo errand-running).

I've been on hiatus from my main part-time gig for a few months now while my supervisor has been on maternity leave, but that changed drastically this week with a project they needed me to spearhead. I gotta say: it's a weird feeling to be working at 11:00 at night while the other 4 people in the house slumber. Indeed, the BG has started going to bed earlier than usual because he has determined it is now necessary for him to wake up at 4:45 AM in order to get to school on time to be prepared for first period.

I look forward to seeing him (awake) again in late June.

But hey, it's Friday, so that's something!! B has his 5th semi-private swim lesson this afternoon. He and neighbor Sean are tearing it up in the local swim school pool...if by "tearing it up" you mean floating, blowing bubbles, and kicking!! B always gives us hilarious commentary on why he doesn't want to go on any given Friday, but always comes running out with a big smile when it's done. He recently started demonstrating his skills in the bathtub, which we take to be a great sign!

And......there you go. Exciting stuff, I tell you! :-)

HAPPY FRIDAY!!

Sweet Surprise

A certain little scamp has been nabbing my point-and-shoot camera and taking pics all over the place.  Most of them are of the ceiling, walls, or floor, so I couldn't help but smile when I downloaded the photos and found this one*:

It's Weird But We'll Take It

Listen-- we shoulda had some snow days by now.  It's FEBRUARY, for pete's sake.  Where are you, white stuff?!

I guess I shouldn't complain too much about 60+ degree weather, though, since it sure makes for sunshiney adventures!   Grammie stayed home with the little miss yesterday afternoon while Brooks and I spent a fun few hours together.  I picked him up from school and then we took a short drive to the newest branch of our local library system.  (Capital D dorky, I know, but it's really quite a place!)  He sat in the front seat with me while we first had a car-picnic:

Then we explored the new facilities--streaming with beautiful spring winter sunshine--and picked up some fun new videos and books.  After that, we cruised on over to B's favorite Main Street, where we parked and walked only to find out that most businesses are closed on Tuesday.  So no train table-playing at the toy store.  Thank goodness the homemade chocolate shop was open so we could get some necessary treats!

I let B skip a nap so, shortly after we got home, C woke up and we decided to load everyone up to do a few more errands in the bright sunshine!   I think the kiddies were loving the glow!

And yes, those are some slightly-uncoordinated-kicks on the feet of the newly 1-year old.  Our first destination was the Stride Rite store where Grammie bought her first pair of REAL shoes.  (Side note:  we were told to buy size 5.5 shoes, which is exactly what we got the Brookster 3 years ago for his birthday Stride Rites!)

I'm sure it surprises no one that I didn't select shoes that were pink, purple, or glittery.   Horrible phone pic, but they're navy......although they totally have some dark pink accents!   :-)
